#ONENATION PUBLIC HEARING AGAINST PUBLIC CHARGE

Community Leaders, Members, Health Care and Service Providers, Educators, Elected Officials Attend and Stand Up with Immigrant Communities

OAKLAND, CA –– On Wednesday, October 2, 2019, One Nation Coalition members – including community leaders and members, physicians, service providers, educators, policy makers, legal advocates and elected officials will attend a public hearing on an injunction against the new federal public charge rule. The broad coalition joins together in their strength and solidarity on Wednesday against the new Department of Homeland Security policy that threatens the health, safety, economy, and unity of civil society. Sherry Hirota, Co-Chair of the One Nation Commission and CEO of Asian Health Services, says, “Immigrants are a benefit to our economy and strengthen our society. Public charge will force families to make a mean-spirited choice: give up health care, food, or housing supports, or separate your families. Our communities are fired up and we’re showing that we are standing up as one to say no to this unAmerican rule.” Community leaders say that the show of community force and public condemnation strengthens the current legal and congressional strategies to prevent the rule from going into effect as scheduled on October 15, 2019.

LEADERS JOIN FORCES AGAINST NEW POLICY TARGETING LEGAL IMMIGRANTS

Assemblymembers Rob Bonta and David Chiu, Supervisor Wilma Chan, Patients, Physicians, Activists Band Together

A broad coalition of elected officials, community leaders, patients, physicians, activists, and supporters are joining forces to lift their collective voice against a new policy that threatens the health, safety, and unity of civil society. The policy specifically goes after legal immigrants who play by the rules, pay taxes, and are contributing to society. They are now at risk if they have ever used vital public support benefits such as health care, food stamps, or housing assistance. Announced by the Department of Homeland Security, the new proposal would punish and potentially separate millions of legal residents from their families or wrongfully and inhumanely deny them readmission or permanent residence. Health care, housing, and other safety net, civic engagement, and advocacy groups have been building a robust movement to fight back, submit comments during the 60-day public comment period, register voters for the mid-term elections, and ultimately call for Congress to block the rule.
